Michaela Meise, artist,
born 1976 in Hanau, Germany

Meise lives and works in Berlin. She studied at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main and at the Kunsthochschule Kassel. Her straightforward and sometimes minimalistic installations often stand in very fragile relation to their surroundings. Some works bear characteristics of modernistic furniture, while others bear images ‹ contaminated › by fragments of personal memories, thus making the artist’s own cultural conditioning apparent. Meise’s objects and installations are usually simplified forms that serve as the basis for a far more elaborate structure. The Quartetto America
presents four nesting tables. Presumably, since the 18th century, quartetto tables or nesting tables have been known in England. In the early 20th century the Wiener Werkstätte and later on the Bauhaus extensively explored the design of nesting tables. The grey jersey tabletop covering Quartetto Amerika as well as the work’s title alludes to a phenomenon spotted in the Bauhaus design, whereby the preoccupation with folk art and handicraft traditions becomes associated with national and ethnical identities. Her works have been shown at the Kunsthalle Schirn in Frankfurt am Main, Kunstvereinen in Graz, Kunstverein in Braunschweig, Badischer Kunstverein in Karlsruhe and many other internationally recognized venues.
